Giving our Community a helping hand
Over the summer months Big Local has been very busy helping groups in our commumity to put on events and has also helped a number of newly formed community groups to become established. Our Support Worker has also worked with organisations to bring a number of events to Goldthorpe including the increasingly popular Dearne Community Arts Festival and a Lone Parent Training Course.
This year we have recognised amazing effort the workers and volunteers have put into the Dearne Community Allotment. Big Local has funded new fencing and gates and also purchased a tractor, trailer and rotavator which is making a huge difference to the workers on site.
Funding has been given to two newly formed groups, Bringing People Together and an Anxiety Group, both these groups are going from strength to strength and are acheiving some really good results. The groups meet at the Snap Tin every week and are open to anyone who wishes to drop in and find out what is happening. If you would like more information please contact The Snap Tin Cafe on Facebook or by calling 01709 891455.
Prospect Training contacted Big Local to ask for support to run a Lone Parent Course in Goldthhorpe. The course was held over three weeks and led to a qualification that attendees could use to help searching for employment and suppport. We were very happy to support this by paying for the venue and refreshments for the duration of the whole course.
Project 14 wanted funding for a fun day to help raise awareness of suicide rates in young people in our area. Funding was agreed to help put this event on but at last minute other funders dropped out so Big Local stepped in and paid for the event ensuring that they were able to go ahead with it.
Astrea Academy have had funding for a trip to take Year 10 to the Houses of Parlaiment and Dearne Award Alliance also gave funding to provide food for pupils attending. Futher updates will be given after the trip goes ahead.
The Snap Tin Cafe have received funding to help continue to provide training, improving skills and increasing employability. This has enabled them to increase the amount of activities and courses they can provide and include a sewing club that is very well attended and proving very popular. For more information on what is provided throughout the week contact Anita at the Snap Tin Cafe.
Big Local has given a contribution to a group of residents who arrange a Christmas Trip to Sundown. This trip is aimed at helping people on low incomes to have an enjoyable day out and our funding paid for 20 over 10s ticket with gift for the visit that will take place on the 14th December.
Funding was given to help contribute to the cost of a fun day that was held on Highgate dog track which helped to raise funds for Weston Park Hospice and was organised by our Chair Lily Dorritt.
Dearne Community Housing has recieved funding for the purchase and renovation of the final house now making the portfolio of 6 family homes finished to a very high standard. Several families now benefit from living in a nice affordable homes and the properties are proving very popular.
There is still some funding available for any group or organisation who has a project in mind, it must be held in the Big Local but if you would like to discuss your ideas contact our Support Worker, April Fisher either through the contact page on this website or telephone 07879 739043.
We are now carrying out our plan review and looking at how the remaining money can be spent, futher information will be sent out early in the New Year so watch this space but we would welcome your ideas and input. If you are interested in getting involved in the Plan Review and have your say please contact April Fisher.
